In general, there are no special preparations to follow before your exam. Because MRI uses a strong magnetic field, metal objects will interfere with the scan; for your convenience, we provide a locker to store your barrettes, jewelry and credit cards. We ask that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, but you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Please check the following list carefully. You cannot be examined by MRI if you have any of the following:

  • A pacemaker
  • Aneurysm clips in the brain
  • Inner ear implants
  • Metal fragments in one or both eyes
  • Implanted spinal cord stimulator

Because a paramagnetic agent (a type of contrast media) may be used, please tell your physician:

  • If you are pregnant, think you might be; or are breast feeding
  • If you have anemia or any diseases that affect red blood cells
  • If you have asthma or other allergic respiratory disorders

Please consult your physician if you have any questions about your eligibility.

Understanding Contrast Media: Certain types of MRI scans require the use of a safe paramagnetic agent or contrast media. This contrast media, which is given intravenously before the exam, highlights certain body parts. When needed, it will be discussed in detail with eligible patients. Tell your physician before your exam if you have ever had an adverse reaction to contrast media.

The Actual Exam: While the MRI test is being conducted, you will lie on a table while your technologist conducts the test from an adjacent room. You will be able to speak to your technologist through the patient intercom system during the entire exam. You should remain relaxed and as still as possible. You will hear a knocking sound from the MRI system that ranges from barely audible to quite noticeable; this is normal.

Payment and Insurance: Please remember to bring the prescription you received from your doctor, as well as your insurance information (including any pre-authorizations you may have received). Maryland Open MRI participates in most major insurance plans. We will be pleased to bill your insurance company for you, upon request. Final responsibility for payment remains with the Patient.

Questions: Your physician or our medical staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have concerning your test. Please notify us 24 hours in advance if you are unable to keep an appointment.
