A founding member of Progressive Radiology, Dr. Bowen began experimenting with MRI interpretation in 1984, when the procedure was still in its infancy. Today, he is considered a pioneer in the field.

Dr. Bowen's research interests include neuroradiology and musculoskeletal and vascular imaging.

Charles M. Citrin, MD

Professional activities
Considered a pioneer in cross-sectional imaging, Dr. Citrin was among the first physicians in the Washington, D.C., area to use a CT scanner for medical diagnosis. In 1984, he became the first physician in the region to use MRI for clinical imaging. Dr. Citrin is also credited with developing and implementing the concept of the freestanding, highly sophisticated outpatient imaging center—a concept imitated nationwide today.

A prolific author, Dr. Citrin has authored or co-authored three book chapters and over 40 peer-reviewed articles. He is a former member of the Editorial Review Boards for the American Journal of Neuroradiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Computed Tomography.

For over 20 years, he served as a senior neuroradiology consultant to the Walter Reed Medical Center. He helped establish Progressive Radiology in 1996.

Dr. Citrin is a senior member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and an active member of the American Medical Association, the American Roentgen Ray Society and the American College of Radiology.

Personal

In his spare time, Dr. Citrin enjoys skiing and playing golf and tennis. He is also a member of the Ukiyo-E Society of America, an organization devoted to the study of Japanese woodblock prints.

Lawrence M. Cohen, MD

While Dr. Cohen has authored several acclaimed, peer-reviewed articles on foot and ankle imaging, he also is interested in neuroimaging, head/neck and paranasal sinus imaging, as well as all areas of MRI.

Professional activities
After completing his radiology residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. David ran the clinical MRI service at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, working under the direction of Robert Edelman, M.D., a world leader in magnetic resonance imaging. This intense, focused experience exposed him to every facet of MRI, particularly musculoskeletal MRI and body MRI. During that time, Dr. David published articles on several cutting-edge applications of MRI, including magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), oxygen-enhanced MR ventilation-perfusion imaging of the lung and gadolinium-enhanced peripheral MR venography.

Following his radiology and MRI training, Dr. David served as director of musculoskeletal and body MRI at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he conducted regular teaching conferences with the hospital's surgical and medical staffs. During his tenure there, he developed an intense interest in orthopedic imaging—an interest nurtured through his close relationships with the hospital's orthopedic and podiatric specialists.

To date, he continues to work closely with clinical colleagues, visiting operating rooms on a regular basis to correlate imaging findings with intraoperative observations. He is active at national and local medical meetings, giving lectures and participating in various task forces.

Dr. David brings extensive experience in magnetic resonance arthrography, sports medicine MRI, and open MRI to Progressive Radiology. He also works tirelessly with technologists and vendors to improve image quality on a daily basis.

Dr. David is a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society and a counselor for Radiological Society of North America. He is active in community affairs.

Abott B. Huang, MD

Dr. Huang's research interests include the imaging of papillary projections in ovarian neoplasms, evaluation of jaw tumors using dentascan and osteomyelitis of the pelvis and hips in paralyzed patients.

His special expertise in MR arthrography, CT colonography and high-field open MRI scanners is a valuable asset to our practice.

An accomplished army reservist and radiologist, Dr. McFarren is credited with helping Andrews Air Force Base become the first air force institution in the nation to obtain ultrasound certification. In addition to treating patients at Progressive Radiology, she instructs medical students and residents at her alma mater, the Uniformed Services University. She is a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society.

In her spare time, Dr. McFarren, who has competed in three rugby World Cups, volunteers as an assistant coach for the United States Women's National Rugby Team.

Professional activities
Dr. Monteferrante's interest in neuroscience took hold during his undergraduate days at Johns Hopkins University. During that time, he conducted research at the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institutes of Health. He went on to serve as chief resident during his diagnostic residency at Bridgeport Hospital, where he also won the hospital's Resident Research Award.

Though well-versed in all aspects of MRI, Dr. Monteferrante has particular expertise in neuro MRI and pediatric neuroradiology. A senior member of the American Society of Neuroradiology, his peer-reviewed publications have addressed such topics as head trauma imaging, the role of imaging in child abuse, the CT diagnosis of emphysematous gastritis and the behavior of ependymoblastoma in the nervous system.

Professional activities
Dr. Perlmutter oversaw the clinical MRI service at the Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Hospital as an MRI fellow. This prestigious fellowship is one of the few in the country that focuses entirely on MRI and its full range of clinical applications.

A contributor to the widely used textbook Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Dr. Perlmutter also published articles on body imaging and anatomy in Radiology and the American Journal of Roentgenology. The Clinical Magnetic Resonance Society granted him credentialed membership not only in general MRI, but also in the subspecialties of orthopedic and neurological magnetic resonance.

Personal
Outside of work, Dr. Smith plays an active role in the community by serving on the boards of several community service organizations and mentoring disadvantaged youths in the Washington, D.C., area. He also has been appointed to many local and county government committees.
